“Jenna,” Piper was impatient now. I could hear it in her voice and I turned my body back toward her and Selena, but did not take my eyes off Hayden.

Piper continued. “Stop feeling sorry for yourself about the stupid ring diving. You can’t be great at everything. Stay here and see this through with us. Then we can be lifeguards together when we’re sixteen. Think how fun that would be! Think how much money we’ll make! Think of the cute guys!” Now the shoe was on the other foot, and Piper was using all of my lines to convince me. “Think of how great it will look on your college apps!”

All of a sudden, Piper stopped. She thought I wasn’t listening to anything she was saying.

“Jenna?”

“Hmmm?”

Piper followed my gaze and then grinned. “You’ll do it, right?”

I sighed. “Do what?”

“Jenna!” Piper punched me playfully in the arm.

I rubbed my arm thoughtfully, a half-smile on my face. “Maybe.”

“Yay!” squealed Selena, and she and Piper high-fived.

The truth was, I was sure I’d failed. I could just feel it in my bones. Hot guy or no hot guy, I might not be doing Junior Lifeguards after all. And it wasn’t up to me at all.

Just then, we were interrupted by a casual, “Hi guys!”

Ziggy had arrived.
